Peptides get marketed as if they're one ingredient, the same way vitamin C or niacinamide are, but that's not quite right. A peptide is simply a short chain of amino acids — shorter than a full protein, which is really just a much longer chain of the same building blocks. Collagen and elastin, the structural proteins that keep skin firm, are themselves made of amino acids linked together, and skin is constantly breaking small pieces off and rebuilding new ones as part of its normal turnover. What makes certain peptides useful in skincare isn't that they're foreign or exotic — it's that specific short sequences are recognisable to skin cells as signals, not just raw material.
The best-studied category is signal peptides, and the mechanism behind them is genuinely clever. When collagen in the deeper skin layers breaks down — from UV exposure, ageing, or normal wear — it leaves behind small collagen fragments rather than simply vanishing. Skin has evolved to read the presence of those fragments as a cue that damage has occurred, prompting fibroblasts (the cells that manufacture new collagen) to ramp up production and repair the area. Signal peptides work by mimicking those breakdown fragments closely enough that fibroblasts respond the same way, even though no actual damage has occurred — effectively borrowing skin's own repair signal to prompt new collagen synthesis. It's a different route to the same fibroblast-activation goal retinol reaches by binding retinoic acid receptors directly — same target cell, two different triggers.
Peptides aren't a single mechanism, though, which is worth knowing before assuming every peptide product does the same job. Carrier peptides work differently again — their role is to bind trace minerals like copper and shuttle them into skin, supporting the enzymatic processes involved in wound healing and collagen synthesis rather than signalling fibroblasts directly. Others, like the neuropeptides used in some anti-wrinkle serums, work by dampening the nerve signalling that triggers repeated muscle contraction, softening the look of expression lines rather than touching collagen at all. Reading which category a peptide falls into matters more than the word "peptide" appearing on the label.
